Database contents

The documents in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs archives concerning the Raoul Wallenberg investigation can be found in file P 2 Eu 1. The dossier includes a main series, a series of annexes and several ancillary series. From 2008 onwards, documents relating to Mr Wallenberg are archived in accordance with the Government Offices’ activity category scheme.

The structure of the database primarily follows the structure of the physical archive.

Main series
The main series includes documents received and prepared at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1945 onwards in connection with Mr Wallenberg’s disappearance. The documents are organised chronologically.

Older documents have in many cases been added as annexes to later government communications. This means that some documents can be found in several places in the series. This also applies to copies of archive documents that have been handed over to Sweden from Russian and American archives, for example. Although these documents mainly relate to the period immediately after Mr Wallenberg’s disappearance, they have been archived according to the time they were received by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and not according to when they were originally drafted.

This series covers cases concerning Raoul Wallenberg that have been registered at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as of October 2008.

Annexes to the main series
This series includes annexes that have been separated from the main series due to their size. The material primarily consists of copies of documents that Sweden has obtained from American and Russian archives. Annexes from the period before 1979 can be found in the main series.

Copies from the archives of missions abroad
This series includes copies of documents from Swedish embassy archives in Berlin, Bonn, Budapest, Bucharest, Moscow, Rome and Vienna.

Investigation into Raoul Wallenberg
This series includes documents from the investigation that was carried out in connection with Professor Nanna Svartz’s information about Mr Wallenberg in 1961.

Accounts and witness statements
This series includes compilations of accounts and witness statements, mainly from the investigation team that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs appointed in 1951 to conduct interviews with released prisoners of war.

Swedish-Russian working group
This series includes documents from the Swedish-Russian working group’s work on photographic comparisons. Most of the working group’s documents are found in the main series.

Efforts made by the Wallenberg family
This series includes copies of documents from the work carried out by Raoul Wallenberg’s relatives, which has also been referred to as the ‘Wallenberg Action’ or ‘The Wallenberg Family Action’.

Printed material and press clippings
This series includes a selection of printed materials and press clippings about Raoul Wallenberg. Only a limited amount of the materials that has been published down the years in the form of articles, printed material and other official prints has been archived separately. Most of this material is found in the main series.

Time period: 1947–1990 and 2001

Travel expenses
This series includes travel expenses from, among others, Detective Inspector Otto Danielsson’s and author Rudolph Phillips’s trips abroad.

Other working material
This series includes working material, including documents related to Finland and Israel.
